Ricardo and Apolonia and their 10 beautiful children were in a stable home they thought was safe until Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017, and their home deteriorated to a dangerous level due to flooding. Apolonia could no longer safely home school her children and Ricardo, a truck driver, needed to work as many hours as possible to earn enough money to sustain his family and restore his home. The family was heartbroken and financially burdened.
When Ricardo and Apolonia applied for home repairs, they felt hopeless. The kids’ classroom had cold concrete where carpet used to be, along with the living areas and their bedrooms. Apolonia’s lower kitchen cabinets were rotted because of the flooding and all the carpet had to be pulled due to moisture that was leading to moldy odors.
After Habitat’s dedicated team identified the scope of work for repairs, we began to rehabilitate the condition of the family’s home. Apolonia was ecstatic about her new vinyl plank floors in her den, living areas, and all 4 bedrooms. She shared videos of her kids joyously smiling as they played in their new living room, which was no longer cold concrete. The couple’s bathroom returned to a livable and efficient condition through the installation of a double sink vanity and the contractor assigned to her home was able to salvage and reuse their granite countertops. Apolonia felt a sense of renewed pride in her home, and specially her kitchen! She stated, “Oh my goodness! I love washing dishes. I am just amazed at this sink and faucet.”
Ricardo now feels a sense of safety has been returned to his children and wife who is now able to focus on returning to college this year. They both thank God for making all things new. Their direct quote, “This is a huge blessing to us. I will never forget that God provided all of this, and he used you all to be the hands and feet.”
