Veterans Build
The National Low Income Housing Coalition finds that 2.5 million veterans heading households are at least 55 years of age. Of those 2.5 million veterans, 24 percent have housing cost burdens. Unlike our older civilians, our older veterans are more likely to have a disability — 35 percent versus 28 percent — which may require home modifications, health, and other supportive services as they age.
Moreover, the financial strain on our veterans is alarming. Nearly 4 million of our veterans pay at least 30 percent of their income toward rent or mortgage, while more than 1.5 million pay at least 50 percent. As you can imagine, using half of your income to pay your rent or mortgage is an enormous strain on any budget, and for our veterans, it's a crisis that needs immediate attention.
With the help of community sponsors, we can build and repair homes for veterans and their families. When available, individuals and group volunteers can sign up to build on veteran homes through our volunteer portal, VolunteerHub.

Aging In Place
With 11,200 Americans turning 65 every day, this is one of the fastest-growing age groups in the United States. A troubling reality is that many older adults, about 2.3 million, are living in homes that are in disrepair or inadequate for their needs and unable to access resources to make these places livable. Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, Texas understands the positive impact that growing old in your own home and community can have.
Our Approach
To guide our work, Habitat developed Housing Plus, a comprehensive aging in place strategy. Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, Texas is recognized as an organization that helps aging adults continue to live at home by performing affordable home repairs.
Not only do we complete person-specific home repairs and modifications — from widening hallways and installing grab bars to building a ramp and updating flooring — but by working with local community organizations, we can connect older adults with social services to address age-related issues including health, isolation, hunger and lack of transportation.
